Members of St. John Ambulance, Dundrum Division, provided first aid and ambulance cover at Rás UCD on the 16th of April, 2011. This fundraising event took the form of a five kilometre road race around the campus of University College Dublin. It is the second such event to be held in aid of University College Dublin Volunteers Overseas (UCDVO).

UCDVO is a charitable organisation offering students, staff and alumni of University College Dublin the opportunity to contribute their time, energy and skills to development projects overseas. St. John Ambulance, Dundrum Division, was particularly delighted to be able to cover this duty as one of our volunteers, David Monks, travelled to both Haiti and India with the UCDVO. David runs the Cadet Division in Dundrum.

The race itself was a great success and raised over €5000 for this worthwhile cause.

The course was well marked and closed off from traffic for the race duration. It was stewarded by UCD's Security company and race officials. St. John Ambulance provided an ambulance at the finish line. Two foot patrols were also operational along the course route.

David Monks in India - Volunteers with both UCDVO and St. JohnThe UCDVO have approximately 800 members and currently run projects in India, Haiti, Nicaragua and Tanzania, where volunteers collaborate with local communities on small-scale development projects in response to local needs. Some examples of their work include the Health Centres built in Nicaragua 2007 & 2008; summer camps in Haiti 2005-2009; physiotherapy support in the Mother Teresa Home, Delhi 2003-2009; and computer education programs in Tanzania 2009.

This June, UCDVO volunteers will again depart to various projects around the world. St. John Ambulance would like to wish them well. We hope that all volunteers enjoy their time abroad while doing such important work.

St. John Ambulance supports many charities and community organisations by providing affordable first aid and ambulance cover at hundreds of fundraising events of all types around Ireland. In certain cases, events could not take place otherwise due to health and safety obligations.
